Fairfax County Association for the Gifted

Building a community of advocates for gifted children and
connecting the people and programs that support them.

The Fairfax County Association for the Gifted (FCAG), is a non-governmental, non-profit organization of parent and student volunteers that supports educational programs for advanced academic students. FCAG's primary activity is advocacy for gifted students. In addition to advocacy, FCAG hosts meetings with distinguished speakers that are free and open to the public, sponsors math contests such as the AMC 8 and AMC 10, and annually hosts a Summer Academic Programs and Enrichment Camp Fair. FCAG also publishes newsletters and hosts a free, online, interactive Yahoo discussion group with over 2000 participants. You do not need to be a resident of Fairfax County to join the organization.

FCAG presents: Your (Math) Teachers are Lying to You!

Date: Thursday, April 25, 2019, 6:15pm-9pm. PIZZA is included!
Place: Pohick Library (6450 Sydenstricker Rd, Burke, VA 22015)
Cost: None! This is a free event, but you must register and space is limited (details below).

George Mason University's Geometry Lab will present an interactive math night, in which we play closer attention to our assumptions and question the context of mathematical truths. When does 2 plus 2 not equal 4? Do the angles of a triangle always sum to 180 degrees? Are you sure you can't divide by zero?

We look at time-keeping on a fictional planet with 8-hour days, we do geometry on the surface of a balloon, and we turn the space around us into a complex number dance floor. And along the way we turn well-known facts on their heads and learn that there is more to mathematics lurking under the surface.

This event is appropriate for kids in grades 3-7. Enjoy pizza, some socializing with parents and kids together, as well as a fabulous evening of mathematical joy.

Please register by sending your child(ren)'s name and grade to fcagevents@gmail.com. This event is open to all, even if you're not a paid member of FCAG, however members get priority registration. Questions? Email president@fcag.org.
