About FCAG
The Fairfax County Association for the Gifted (FCAG), is a non-governmental, non-profit organization of parent and student volunteers that supports educational programs for advanced academic students. FCAG has representatives on two advisory committees to the Fairfax County School Board. In addition to advocacy, FCAG hosts meetings with distinguished speakers that are free and open to the public, sponsors math contests such as the AMC 8 and AMC 10, and annually compiles a Guide of Summer Academic Programs and Enrichment Camps. FCAG also publishes newsletters and hosts a free, online, interactive Yahoo discussion group with over 700 participants. You do not need to be a resident of Fairfax County to join the organization.
What specifically does FCAG do?
- FCAG serves as a resource for parents in locating materials relevant to all students, including advanced academic learners and other gifted students.
- FCAG sponsors programs featuring nationally known speakers or local education leaders discussing pertinent topics of interest.
- FCAG compiles a Summer Academic Programs and Enrichment Camp Guide. This unique guide lists both local and national programs designed to challenge and enrich children's summer experience. The Guide (which can be found on the FCAG Publications page) is sent to all FCAG members every winter. FCAG also sponsors an annual Summer Academic Programs and Enrichment Camps Fair for the general public every winter.
- FCAG members serve on the Advanced Academic Programs Advisory Committee (AAPAC) and the Business and Community Advisory Council (BCAC) to the Fairfax County School Board.
- FCAG presents testimony to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and the Fairfax County School Board on a variety of educational issues such as budget and curriculum.
- FCAG participates in the Fairfax Education Coalition, a network of parents, teachers, and community members dedicated to strengthening public involvement with Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). The coalition monitors and reports on the actions of the FCPS administration and the Fairfax County School Board to increase public awareness. The coalition advocates for improved accountability, transparency, and community participation in the FCPS decisionmaking process.
- FCAG publishes numerous newsletters per year for members about timely issues in gifted education, hints for helping students at home, and resources for developing students to their fullest potential. Past newsletters can be found on the FCAG Publications page.
- FCAG monitors legislation and regulations affecting the education of all students with an emphasis on gifted/talented programs.
- FCAG maintains and updates this web site to provide the general public with access to past newsletters and the last Summer Academic Programs and Enrichment Camp Guide, as well as links to other web sites on gifted education and students.
